Why does the government care about marriage?

Mike discusses the government's purpose for getting involved in marriage as well as the three approaches the government can take towards a given behavior (prohibit, permit, and promote). The government has no reason to endorse same sex marriage because such a union does not benefit society but, in fact, causes harm to it.
